Assignment 1 Leisure Definitions - Justin Jahnke

Sitting at a poker table with a small group of your closest friends provides an opportunity to relax unlike few others. Although the table itself may appear restrictive, it ironically provides an arena of freedom. As the cards are dealt and the blinds are posted, you are granted unrestricted conversation and the ability to joke about life’s common stressful situations in a carefree atmosphere. Topics may shift from humorous family anecdotes to the antics of a maniacal employer, or from a difficult homework assignment to the neurotic behavior of a significant other, allowing all of your tension to melt away in the solidarity of your companions. Poker is a leisurely game in which much of the joy is derived simply from the bonding experiences around revolving chip stacks. Even though the atmosphere is playful and carefree, however, the game of poker is recreational as well. It is challenging and actively engaging due to the level of skill involved. As any seasoned player would know, a great deal of personal (as well as financial) enjoyment is gained from consistant victories. But even at a loss, poker offers personal fulfillment, intrinsic joy, and freedom, thus making it an excellent source of leisure.
